Repair or replace comes first on the older streets. The original estate around Endeavour Drive runs on ageing asbestos-cement sewer mains, and a line there that keeps reblocking has usually reached a decision point rather than a cleaning job.

1. Reline or dig, decided by footage

2. Sand finds every gap

   Barrier-dune sand lies under much of the suburb, and with groundwater sitting close to the surface, a displaced joint lets it in, where it settles at the first low point or bend.

3. Swamp soils slow the fall

   Peaty Organosol ground, from the old swamp the canals now cut through, keeps drain joints saturated, which flattens the grade and lets silt build up along flat runs.

   The golf club, the bowls club and the shopping village near Sunderland Drive and Avon Avenue all run kitchens, and fat from them reaches sewer branches shared with houses.

5. Storm tide on the low streets

   Endeavour Drive and Marina Boulevard sit inside both the flood and coastal planning areas, so when a storm tide pushes in, the outlets go under and pits hold water until the tide recedes.

Houses here are mostly owner-occupied and, at the last census, more than nine in ten were detached homes, so most of this work is on household lines a single visit can sort.
